Confidence Comes From Within

Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in the doing.
– Theodore Roosevelt

Now it’s no secret that Victoria aka InTheFrow is probably my biggest blogging influence, and when she wrote a post about where she gained her confidence I couldn’t help but want to write my own take. My level of confidence has gone up and down like a roller coaster for as long as I can remember, and while I still have days where I suffer from body confidence, I’d like to think I’m a pretty confident person all around. During my early teen years, my confidence was at an all-time low, I was horribly bullied for having red hair plus my body was constantly changing and developing so every time I started to like myself something would change.

Since being at university though my confidence has gone up, and it went up high enough to start blogging. My blog alone has increased my confidence so much that I now adore posting fashion and style related posts…especially outfit posts. I cannot thank you guys enough for helping me to become confident in my body to that degree.

For a couple of years, I had terrible anxiety and wouldn’t actually go anywhere on my own, and instead, spend hours sitting in my room hiding away and making up excuses as to why I couldn’t go meet my friends anywhere. I’m so thankful that I’m no longer like this, otherwise, I’d never have gone to any blogger events, nor would I have been happy to travel outside out the UK with only my friends. I don’t think I would have gone to university either, or even decided to study dance…I used to want to be a vet as it didn’t require too much social interaction.

Instead of collapsing into myself though I’ve fought through all my anxiety and fears and become a much more confident person…but not only that I’ve also become a happier person and have learnt to appreciate the people around me a lot more.

Dare to be you

I’ve always tried to stay true to myself, and although I can sometimes been influenced by those around me it’s something I believe is of great importance. One person who is also true to herself is Doe Deere*, now this amazing young woman is the founder and CEO of LimeCrime Cosmetics, a brand I think we’ve all heard of. Now Doe is a very unique character and has been featured in Savoir Flair*, but she isn’t just the CEO of a cosmetic company, she is also a photo blogger*. I adore Doe’s bright hair choices and the way she shows off her poreclian skin tone with pride, something which helps me feel a lot more confident within my own paleness. Now this woman is quite important to the point she even has her own page on L.A. Biz* (but lets take a moment to appreciate how stunning she looks in her profile photo).

Everyone gets spots

So the photos in this blog post were taken at 10 pm when I decided to play around with using my phone as a camera remote and ended up liking how they turned out. I have zero makeup on, no bra on and I have a couple of spots on show in a couple of photos. In the past, I would have instantly deleted anything that made me look less than perfect, but in reality, this is how I am a majority of the time. While I love playing with makeup, I don’t apply it every day…nor do I feel the need to apply it every day I’m quite comfortable going out in public bare-faced. I HATE WEARING A BRA. Unfortunately, though I don’t feel confident enough to free the nipple just yet…it takes a long time for more to be comfortable with having larger boobs so that’ll take baby steps. The reality is though, nobody ever looks as perfect in real life as they do in photographs. We all edit them, we all try to find the best lighting and we all like the world to think we are a perfect human being…and to be honest, that’s natural instinct, wanting to be the best.

A smile is the best accessory

I try to have a smile on my face as much as possible, more so when I’m around people as it makes you look a lot friendlier and more approachable than a frown does. As Annie once sang “you’re never fully dressed without a smile” and it’s true, just smiling can make you feel more positive within yourself. Not only will you make yourself feel better but you can also brighten up the days of those around you simply by flashing a smile. I know that I’ve personally improved my mood and felt more confident about something just by smiling to myself, obviously it’s easier to smile if you’ve got a reason to smile…but you are probably someone’s reason for their smile.

Don’t listen to online trolls

I’m a blogger and I openly talk about my life, this leaves me very open and vulnerable to attack from trolls and because I am honest in my posts…they know how to make a strike that will hurt. While I’ve only had a few trolls come my way I try to ignore them as much as possible, after all, they’re hiding behind a screen. Also, I’m not going to be able to please everyone, no matter how much I try or want to. I have to say that I’ve recently stopped going on social media so much as at the weekend and it’s got me feeling a hell of a lot better about myself and my confidence. I’m not constantly comparing myself to someone else, or see some of the amazing opportunities my friends are getting…resulting in a bit of green eye jealousy(although I’m always proud of them, I can’t help but wonder what I’m doing differently).

I’ve had several messages telling me I don’t deserve some of the opportunities I receive, or that I shouldn’t be friends with a certain person for a specific reason…all things that are just one person’s opinion. I do find I get a lot more positivity from the blogging and online community than I do negativity, which I am incredibly grateful for.

Surround yourself with positivity

The people you surround yourself with can help how you perceive yourself incredibly. I try to only surround myself with positivity, people that support me, make me happy and confident in myself. This has meant that I have cut off a few friends in the past few months…some of these friendships were ones that I thought were going to last a lifetime.

Love you lots like jelly tots x

All photos within this post were taken by myselff on my Olympus Pen E-PL7 in unnatural lighting. They were then edited on Photoshop CC 2015 and VSCO.
